Table Saw Training Syllabus
Types of operations: ripping, cross cutting and dado/rabbets
- No molding blades allowed on the SawStop
- Different blades for each operation or combination blade for ripping & cross cutting
- Do not set water or drink containers on the cast iron table. That causes top to rust. Sweaty hands will also cause the table top to rust.
Explanation of the SawStop system
Electric charge in the blade gets absorbed by the body activating the stop. The blade stops, drops below the table surface and the motor stops all in 5 milliseconds It will activate any time the blade is moving, even when winding down Blade and brake cartridge must be replaced after activation. Cartridges $69, Blades $60-200 Video demonstration http://tinyurl.com/SawStop-Demonstration Stop system takes a few moments to boot up when you plug it in, wait for green light Do not cut metals, conductive materials, mirrored acrylic, anything with carbon traces such as laser cut or engraved pieces, green or wet wood. The SawStop system will not prevent kickback Dado blade requires a special brake cartridge http://tinyurl.com/Dado-Brake-Cartridge Wall of shame Blade raising handle Mechanism lock Blade tilting handle Mechanism lock. Snug the lock, don’t over tighten it Setting angle with placard Setting angle with protractor Setting angle with drafting squares Setting angle with electronic angle gauge Resetting to 90 degrees with combination or machinist square Throat plate Instructions for removal Elevation adjustment (3mm allen wrenches) Dado blade requires different throat plate http://tinyurl.com/Zero-Clerance-Dado-Insert Zero clearance insert http://tinyurl.com/Zero-Clerance-Dado-Insert Thin or small pieces can fall through normal throat plate opening into saw or get caught & be thrown Homemade plate with MJ Splitter http://tinyurl.com/MJ-Splitter-Instructions Blade changing wrenches Location One for the arbor and one for the nut Righty tighty, lefty loosey Snug the nut up but don’t overtighten it when installing the blade Blade Guard Demonstrate installation Reduces chances of personal blade contact Anti kickback paws to help prevent kickbacks Splitter to help prevent kickbacks Prevents material from rotating or closing up on the back side of the blade. Dust collection Riving Knife (Use when you can’t use the blade guard) Installation Splitter to help prevent kickbacks Prevents material from rotating or closing up on the back side of the blade. Fence Adjusting to a cut via the tape on the fence bar Measuring distance to blade Movement of fence after locking it down Using a stop block on fence in combination with miter guide for repetitive small cuts Feather Boards Purpose Affixing Operation of miter gauge Inserting into the “T” slot Setting the angle Addition of auxiliary fence Using stop blocks on auxiliary fence for repetitive cuts Use of crosscutting sled Check blade indexed with slot in sled when setting it up Use of stop block for repetitive cuts Be cognizant at all times of finger position relative to blade Push Blocks/sticks Homemade version http://tinyurl.com/Homemade-Pushsticks GRR-Ripper http://tinyurl.com/GRR-Ripper-Instructions Switches On/off switch location Run/stop switch Location Operation Dado and Rabbeting Changing the brake cartridge and blade Use of a sacrificial face on the fence for rabbeting Saw setup Test the blade stop system by touching the side of the blade WITH THE SAW BLADE STOPPED while observe the red light on the switch box. It should flash Check that blade is at the desired angle Raise blade no higher than 3/8” above work Set fence to desired width Check that push block/stick will not contact the blade The dust collector must be operating during sawing Proper operation Dust collector must be on during sawing operations Don’t feed the material too fast. That causes burning and smoke Taper jig operation http://tinyurl.com/MicroDial-Instructions Technique Don’t push on the side of the work past the front of the blade. That will pinch the blade causing a potential kickback. Don’t set featherboard rearward of the front of the blade Keep the material tight against the fence and tight to the table Stand left of the work with L knee in front of switch, allowing operation of off switch with leg and avoids path of kickback. The switch will be accessible while you maintain control of the workpiece if for some reason you have a problem partway through the cut and need to stop Always have a push stick close by to solve unexpected problems mid cut Rough cut large sheets to make pieces more manageable on the tablesaw Festool operation Festool saw guide After operations Resetting the blade to 90 when finished with angle cuts Unplug, remove throat plate, raise blade full height, use square to adjust to 90 If using an alternative blade (plywood) replace it with the Combination blade. Lower blade below deck when finished cutting Fragility of Carbide tips Remove off cuts and replace miter gauge, push block/stick to their proper storage Turn off the dust collector Safety Have the push block/stick close at hand Be sure nothing is touching the blade when starting Be aware of your hand position relative to the blade at all times particularly moving Do a mental dry run before starting the saw Using hands or is push block/stick closeby? Will the blade contact the push block? Is there a possibility the part will fall through the throat opening? Will hands be clear of blade for the entire operation? Is there support for the follow through? Either the saw safety guard or riving knife must always be used. Never make a cut without this protection. Floor free of debris to avoid slipping or tripping Unplug before removing throat plate, changing blades or making internal adjustments Don’t raise blade any higher than 3/8” – ½” above work Never freehand saw material. It should always be supported by the crosscut sled, the table and the fence or miter gauge. Remove loose or dangling items before using. Loose jewelry, gloves, hoody strings, wired headset, scarfs. Long hair should be tied back and long sleeves rolled up Never reach for the cutoff piece while the saw blade is moving Don’t pull the piece through the saw Don’t saw warped or twisted wood. There is a blade pinch danger Kickback Demonstration http://tinyurl.com/Kickback-Demonstration SawStop manual http://tinyurl.com/SawStop-Manual
Items to bring to SawStop training Combination & machinist square drafting squares Electronic angle gauge Protractor (there is a “Gauge-iT) behind the drill press Dado blade and Dado cartridge Dado blade insert Dado/rabbet sample Zero clearance throat insert with MJ Splitters Feather board Tape measure Small “C” clamp to demonstrate stop blocks SawStop manual
